A combination of 4 arcs hand crafted into an ash wood spatula. Complexity is held within the small details for a comfortable hold that naturally extends off the arm.

THINKING
I thought about how inside or outside curves would affect the position of the spatula in a user’s hand. I settled on two main details. A downward arc when the spatula is resting on a table and asymmetry; all other changed details revolve around these points. After the first prototype, I came back and refined the top profile into two simple arcs, eliminating curves that could not be justified.
PROTOTYPES
Two pink foam and one grey foam model. The first pink foam model confirmed a nice curve for the index finger to rest on top of. Testing comfort and the curves in relation to hand, wrist, and arm. The second pink foam was the refined form, testing chamfer, radius, and transitional blends. The symmetrical handle face was decided on the grey foam, with an additional tapering chamfer on the sides.
FABRICATION
I used the band saw for the top and side cuts and a variety of sanding techniques to get the ash wood to its final form; belt sander, hand sanding, files and jigs. Small details such as a slightly domed top provide comfort and a finished feel.
